You may wonder... Why would I want an organic cotton tee instead of a regular cotton tee? What's the difference?
Well, organic cotton is a lot easier on the environment when it is grown. For instance, organic cotton is usually rain-fed, not irrigated, so it uses much less water from the water tables that serve our communities. Conventional irrigated cotton requires a tremendous amount of water to grow: 106,000 cubic feet of water per acre! That's a lot, especially during high drought years when water is scarce in some regions of the country.
Also, conventional cotton consumes 10% of the world's pesticides, which amounts to an incredible two billion pounds! And, there are at least 20 types of organophosphate and carbamate pesticides being used, many of which were originally developed as toxic nerve agents during World War II. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and insecticides. Beneficial insects and trap-crops are usually used to control pests instead.
In addition, organic cotton growers use composted manures and cover-crops to replace synthetic fertilizers. Innovative weeding strategies are used instead of applying herbicides that can later leech into our water tables. And, nature's frost and water inducement prepare plants for harvest, instead of using toxic defoliants.
We like organic cotton for these reasons, and have decided to offer it to you as a great new alternative to our conventional cotton tees. They are nice and soft, too! Buying the slightly more expensive organic cotton tees instead of conventional tees is one small thing you can do to help preserve our environment. It's a choice we are happy to offer!
